Māori Health

As a Government agency committed to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi, PHARMAC has developed a Māori Health Strategy to improve the way we respond to the health needs of Māori. The Strategy has six key aims, including improving Māori representation within PHARMAC, improving how PHARMAC responds to Māori health needs, and improving information on medicines for Māori.

The strategy was developed in consultation with Tangata Whenua at a series of hui in 2002, 2004 and 2005. PHARMAC reported back on progress and updated the strategy in 2005. You can read the Māori Responsiveness Strategy here (23 pages, 83 KB). Our report on the implementation of the Strategy is here (18 pages, 248 KB).

A significant programme currently being delivered is the He Rongoā Pai He Oranga Whānau (HRPHOW, Māori Staying Well with Medicines) programme. This programme aims to increase awareness and understanding of the appropriate use, storage and disposal of medicines. You can find out more about this programme here until the HRPHOW website is updated.

Te Whaioranga

PHARMAC's Māori Health Team (Te Whaioranga) works across the organisation to ensure the Māori Health Strategy is embedded in PHARMAC's work, and that the organisation is responsive to Māori. Te Whaioranga also convenes a Māori caucus that ensures a support framework for people working in Māori health across PHARMAC, its Board and advisory bodies such as the Consumer Advisory Committee and the Pharmacology and Therapeutics Advisory Committee.
